New Year's Festival of Naga

Date: January 15th
This is the only occasion to see all the clans and tribes of Naga at once. Place of the New Year's festival differs each year. It was held in Hkamti in 2000, Rayshi in 2001.

Naga wine and beans

Nagas make their own special kind of wines, one of which is white and served at the new year's festival. Tourists are also offered to taste it. Like Japanese, Nagas also eat NATTO of fermented soybeans. Each clan and tribe has its own recipe. Alcohol percentage, color and other features vary depending on the wine's ingredients. There is a detailed report on Indian Naga's wine and Natto written by Prof.Yoshida of National Museum of Ethnology in Osaka, Japan.

Textiles

Prof. Shinobu Yoshimoto has written a detailed report on Indian Naga's textile and its garment culture separate from Indian. This report is on the vol. 83 issue of "Ethnology " by National Museum of Ethnology. Indian Naga textiles are sometimes found at the market in Yangon. It is not difficult to specify the producing tribes of each textile by its design.

CHIN
Chin National Day

Date: February 20th
Like Naga, Chin also celebrate this date but not annually. They donate a cattle to the God at this occasion.

Traditional clothes are different among tribes such as who lives in the same area. It is interesting to know that females of weave the mantle for the females of Kaya state.

Festival of Rawang tribe

Morse

American missionary, Morse is known as the founder of Risu village in the north of Indian border. He has lead some 1200 Risu tribe people to immigrate and establish their own village. Morse has returned to the village in 2000 after 26 years. It took him 5 years to get the entry permission from the Yangon's central government.

Taron

It is not known if Taron has the same origin with in southern China. At least they share the same tribe name. Taron's famous feature is its shortness; their average height is only 110cm, since they have been repeating marriages among the single family. As of May 2001, there is only one pure-blooded Taron and the tribe is truly endangered. There are many ancestors of Tarons married to Rawang in which case children grows to the normal height.
